Finding your purpose

I just finished reading ‘The Best Yes’ by Lysa Terkeurst (which is amazing, go read it right now) and she says this, “If we want His direction for our decisions, the great cravings of our souls must not only be the big moments of assignment. They must also be the seemingly small instructions in the most ordinary of moments when God points His Spirit finger, saying, Go there.” I freaking love that!

I don’t know about you, but when I ask God for direction or for what my purpose in life is, I always think it’s going to be something super extravagant. Like maybe God will say, “Hey Kristi, go out and build 15 orphanages and I’ll supply all the goods” or “Hey Kristi, travel to each country and love on as many people as possible” or “Hey Kristi, sell all your stuff, leave everything you know and become a missionary.” You get the point. I want to change the world. Like, the whole world. & hey, that may be my calling at some point in my life, I’m not counting those ideas out, but for right now, I may need to start small and right where I’m at.

I think we get caught up in the BIG picture and what that may look like, that we pass up some really amazing opportunities in the small picture. You know, our everyday lives. But uuuuggghhh sometimes my everyday life is so boring, I want to make a difference! That’s me talking to God. I think there are seasons in life. Seasons where you need to stay put, be content and listen for the ‘small’ moments God starts speaking. Maybe that’s by encouraging a friend, buying coffee for the car behind you, volunteering in the neighborhood, spending time with family, taking the extra five minutes to talk to the lady at the grocery store or maybe going after that dream you have and doing it right from the comfort of your own home. Even though we sometimes forget, those are God moments too. God calls us right where we’re at to be a blessing. To live out our Godly calling.

This is something He is totally teaching me right now. Now don’t get me wrong, I do think there will be a season where I get to adventure and scream from a mountain top how awesome Jesus is. But I think for right now, at this very moment, I need to scream it from my couch.

Don’t get discouraged if you’re like me and you’re still waiting for that kick booty, Jesus called moment. It’s coming and only Jesus knows when. So in the meantime, I think we need to focus and take care of what’s in front of us first. Be a blessing to those around us. Show God’s love to those people right in the community. Don’t get so busy being busy that you miss those small ‘God moments’ that are actually big ‘God moments’.

“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand” Psalm 37:23-24
